8th African Anti-Corruption Day. Protecting whistleblowers: the focus of our activities.
CONAC celebrated this event in Bertoua from the 9th to the 11th of July, 2024 by organising a training seminar and an awareness-raising march.
This training seminar was organised on the theme: ‘Effective Whistleblower Protection Mechanism: A Critical Tool in the Fight Against Corruption’, in the Conference Room of the Bertoua Urban Council. The seminar brought together participants from 81 public and semi-public institutions and 26 devolved services consisting of chairpersons and members of anti-corruption units as well as focal points in Delegations, Regional Branches and Agencies of public services in the East. Participants shared experiences and acquired lessons on three themes: ‘the fight against corruption in public procurement in Cameroon’, ‘the protection of whistleblowers in the fight against corruption in Cameroon’ and ‘leadership for behavioural change.
The day itself, African Anti-Corruption Day, was observed on the 11th of July, 2024, with an awareness-raising march led by the Governor of the East Region, Grégoire MVONGO, and the Chairman of CONAC, Rev. Dr Dieudonné MASSI GAMS.
At the end of the awareness-raising march, members of the Integrity Club of the University of Bertoua presented a sketch to the 5,000 participants in the march on the need to report corrupt practices as a way of safeguarding the general interest.
The Chairman of CONAC, in his closing statement, emphasised the importance of protecting whistleblowers and the provisions of the text setting up CONAC, which protect whistleblowers.
