North Region Commits to Render Free Public Service
The national campaign advocating for free-of-charge public service, organized by the National Anti-Corruption Commission, CONAC, stamped its mark on the North Region on the 29th of November, 2018
The North and Far North Regions have joined six other Regions in Cameroon to embrace and applaud the fight against corruption in the public service. The national campaign advocating for free public service, organized by the National Anti-Corruption Commission CONAC, stamped its marks on the Far North and North Regions on the 26th and 29th of November, 2018 respectively.
In the city of Garoua, the event mobilized civil servants, members of the civil society, trade unionists and various traditional dance groups, who combed the city, affixing free public service notice boards on administrative buildings, to the delight of inhabitants and users of public services in particular.
In his welcome speech, the Government Delegate to the Garoua City Council, Elhadji Bouba Ahmadou, outlined measures that are already being carried out to fight against corruption in the city council, amongst them the creation of an anti-corruption unit.
Addressing the caravan participants, administrative, religious and traditional authorities present at the launch of the event at the Garoua City Hall, CONAC’s Chairman Rev. Dr Dieudonné MASSI GAMS pointed out that the Garoua caravan aimed at reminding civil servants of the notion of free public service as the fundamental essence of their functions. Besides the authorized dues, no other requests should be made to users of the public service. To him, the caravan which fell in line with activities marking the African Year for the Fight against Corruption was also an occasion to canvass for popular adhesion to the national fight against corruption.
The Governor of the North Region, M. Jean ABATE EDI’I, while launching the caravan, said he would leave no stone unturned in his drive to rid the public services of the North Region of corruption. Sanctions would be meted out to the corrupt, while people of integrity would be raised.
Besides the affixing of notice boards demanding that public service be rendered free of charge on administrative buildings in the city of Garoua, flyers and other gadgets encouraging free public service were distributed, while city dwellers were enjoined to denounce corruption in all its forms through CONAC’s call free number 1517.
